Overview

Cluster studies can help pinpoint some of the causes of scleroderma. (Also see: Causes of Scleroderma, What is Scleroderma?, Types of Scleroderma, and Systemic Sclerosis)

Analysis of gene expression profiles and protein-protein interaction networks in multiple tissues of systemic sclerosis (SSc). Analysis indicated that there were common pathological clusters that contributed to the pathogenesis of SSc in different tissues. PubMed, BMC Med Genomics, 2019 Dec 27;12(1):199.

Phenotypes determined by cluster analysis and their survival in the prospective EUSTAR cohort of patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). Our work suggests that restricting the subsets of SSc patients only to the cutaneous involvement may not capture the complete heterogeneity of the disease. PubMed, Arthritis Rheumatol, 04/10/2019.

Australian Clusters

Interpretation of an Extended Autoantibody Profile in a Well–Characterized Australian Systemic Sclerosis (Scleroderma) Cohort Using Principal Components Analysis. Five major autoantibody clusters with specific clinical and serologic associations were identified in Australian SSc patients and subclassification and disease stratification using autoantibodies may have clinical utility, particularly in early disease. PubMed, Arthritis Rheumatol.

Canadian Clusters

There might be a higher incidence of scleroderma than usual in the Nova Scotia area.

Sydney residents dying early Sydney-area residents have a shorter lifespanthan other Canadians but no one can yet say why. Halifax Herald Limited.

Sydney tar ponds have been cleaned up but ghosts of toxic past remain. The Sydney Tar Ponds were the site of the most toxic place in Canada and the possible cause of terrible illnesses that plagued some neighbours. CTV News.

A Message to the Kahnawake Mohawk Nation Re:Scleroderma Epidemic at Kahnawake. It is clear that the people of Kahnawake have been exposed to solvents from local industry and from dump sites. It is clear that there is much Scleroderma at Kahnawake. The high rate of Scleroderma must be investigated at Kahnawake and perhaps, Akwesasne. John H.W. Hummel. Scleroderma Clusters in United States

Choctaw Native Americans: NIH-Funded Native American Study Finds Gene Site Associated With Scleroderma A study blending modern-day genetic marker research and century-old tribal records has identified a chromosomal site associated with the connective tissue disease scleroderma in Oklahoma Choctaw Native Americans. Although scleroderma affects members of all ethnic groups, the disorder is particularly prevalent among the Choctaw. NIH. (Also see Causes of Scleroderma: Genetics)

State is studying city's cancer rates. As the state health department investigates cancer rates in Methuen, a professor at Boston University said that cases of multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, polymyositis, scleroderma and other autoimmune diseases in the city's Spicket River neighborhood could signal the presence of environmental factors that often cause such diseases.
