Feeling the chill: Raynaud's phenomenon sufferers battle cold hands, feet - and misconceptions. The New York-based Raynaud's Association, an international support group of about 2,500 patients, estimates that 5 percent to 10 percent of Americans experience the phenomenon, though many may not know they have it. Raynaud’s Disease: the Reason Behind Cold, White Fingers and Toes. Exposure to cold normally results in slowing of blood flow to fingers and toes. Small arteries in extremities narrow, reducing blood flow and preserving the core body temperature. For people with Raynaud’s disease, the response is exaggerated for unknown reasons. Newswise. Humor shaped sculptor's artwork. Maureen Scott, a sculptor, died at Rose Medical Center on March 23 after a short illness. She had scleroderma, which advanced swiftly. She was 57. Pregnancy Advice for Women With Arthritis. It is recommended that all women with arthritis be counseled by a rheumatologist and an obstetrician before attempting to get pregnant. In addition, women considering pregnancy should have their rheumatic condition under control for at least 3 to 6 months before attempting to get pregnant. Jury Is Still Out on Gluten, the Latest Dietary Villain. There is no question that eating gluten aggravates celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder that damages the small intestine and interferes with absorption of nutrients. But doctors say it is unclear whether gluten can be blamed for other problems. Whole wheat and other cereal grains that contain gluten can be hard to digest. Queen of pain. Agnes James-Bazil recounted a tale of pain, pain, and more pain for many years. Eventually, she got the news from her doctor, that she was suffering with Scleroderma. besides suffering with Scleroderma. Agnes received a double blow when she was told she also had another rare disease called Myasthenia Gravis.
