Fatigue is a reliable, sensitive and unique outcome measure in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This study demonstrates that measures of fatigue are reliable and sensitive to change, and should be considered for inclusion as a core outcome measure in RA. P. Minnock. Rheumatology Advance Access. September 22 2009. (Also see: Symptoms of RA).
Do Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) Patients Have a Higher Risk for Sleep Apnea? Patients with RA may be at a higher risk for sleep apnea compared to non-RA subjects. S. Reading. JRheum. July 31 2009. (Also see: RA)
The effectiveness and retention rates of methotrexate (MTX) in psoriatic arthritis (PsA) with MTX treated patients with rheumatoid arthritis as a reference population. MTX treatment was associated with improvement of disease activity and health related quality of life in PsA patients after 6 months of therapy. E. Lie. Ann Rheum Dis. September 9 2009. (Also see: Psoriasis)
Elevated platelet-monocyte complexes (PMC) ın patıents wıth psorıatıc arthrıtıs (PsA). Endothelial activation might have a role in the pathogenesis of both psoriasis and PsA. Among parameters of platelet activation, only PMC might play a role in the pathogenesis of PsA. (InformaWorld) G.E. Pamuk. Platelets. September 14 2009. (Also see: Psoriasis and Endothelin)
Impact of primary Sjögren's syndrome (SS) on smell and taste: effect on quality of life (QoL). Clinically important impairment of chemosensory perception occurred in the SS group compared with age- and gender-matched controls contributing to the reduced health-related QoL that characterized these individuals. U.F. Kamel. Rheumatology Advance Access. September 14 2009. (Also see: Sjogren's Research)
Pattern of Arterial Calcification in Patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). Our study confirms that patients with SLE have significantly higher prevalence and extent of systemic arterial calcification compared with age and sex matched controls. Kai-Hang Yui. JRheum. September 15 2009. (Also see: Symptoms of Lupus)
Nutrient intakes during diets including unkilned and large amounts of oats in celiac disease. Large amounts of oats, both kilned and unkilned in gluten-free diet, can increase intakes of nutrients in celiac patients in remission. (PubMed) Kemppainen TA. Eur J Clin Nutr. September 16 2009. (Also see: Celiac Disease)
Prevalence and risk factors for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) in patients with lupus (SLE). The significant association of lupus anti coagulant (LAC) and presence of anti-phospholipid antibodies (APS) in PAH cases suggests that thrombosis may play an important role in PAH with SLE. A. Prabu. Rheumatology Advance Access. August 11 2009. (Also see: Symptoms of Lupus)
Cardiovascular Autonomic Modulation After Acute Resistance Exercise (RE) in Women With Fibromyalgia (FM). After acute RE, women with FM responded differently from controls. These postexercise responses may be attributed to the altered autonomic responsiveness to physiologic stress that characterizes FM. J.D. Kingsley. Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Volume 90, Issue 9, Pages 1628-1634 (September 2009). (Also see: FMS)
Influence of Craniosacral Therapy on Anxiety, Depression and Quality of Life in Patients with Fibromyalgia (FM). The present study shows that craniosacral therapy improves the quality of life of patients with FM, reducing their perception of pain and fatigue and improving their night rest and mood, with an increase in physical function. Our craniosacral therapy protocol also reduces anxiety levels, partially improving the depressive state. G. A. Matarán-Peñarrocha. eCAM Advance Access. September 3 2009. (Also see: Treatments of FMS)
Chiropractic treatment for fibromyalgia: a systematic review. Currently, there is insufficient evidence to conclude that chiropractic is an effective treatment for fibromyalgia. Edzard Ernst. (SpringerLink) Clinical Rheumatology June 22, 2009. (Also see: FMS)
A strong heritability of psoriatic arthritis (PsA) over four generations—the Reykjavik Psoriatic Arthritis Study. These findings indicate that in addition to a strong and complex genetic component in PsA, there is an important environmental contribution. A. Karason. Rheumatology Advance Access. September 9 2009. (Also see: Causes of Psoriasis)
Pool exercise for patients with fibromyalgia (FMS) or chronic widespread pain: A randomized controlled trial and subgroup analyses. The exercise-education programme showed significant, but small, improvement in health status in patients with FMS and chronic widespread pain, compared with education only. K. Mannerkorpi. Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine. September 2009. (Also see: FMS and Exercise)
Moderate Exercise Increases Expression for Sensory, Adrenergic, and Immune Genes in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) Patients But Not in Normal Subjects. Muscle fatigue and pain are major symptoms of CFS. After moderate exercise, CFS and CFS-FMS (Fibromyalgia) patients show enhanced gene expression for receptors detecting muscle metabolites and for sympathetic nervous system, and immune system, which correlate with these symptoms. Alan R. Light. The Journal of Pain. 03 August 2009. (Also see: CFS and FMS)
Low-dose natural human interferon- lozenges in the treatment of Behçet's syndrome (BS). Low-dose natural human IFN- did not have beneficial effects on reducing the total ulcer burden among BS patients from Turkey. H.E. Zeytin. Rheumatology Advance Access. August 28, 2009. (Also see: Behcet's)
Does the weather really matter? A cohort study of influences of weather and solar conditions on daily variations of joint pain in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In the present sample, pain was significantly associated with 3 or more weather variables in 1 out of 6 patients, for whom the magnitude of weather sensitivity might significantly influence pain reporting in clinical care and research. (PubMed) G. Smedslund. Arthritis Rheum. 2009 Aug 27;61(9):1243-1247. (Also see: RA)
