August 2009
Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SNHL) in Patients with Mixed Connective Tissue Disease (MCTD): Immunological Markers and Cytokine Levels. In MCTD, SNHL is a specific organ manifestation and appears frequently. A. Hajas. JRheum. August 14, 2009. (Also see: MCTD)
Efficacy of bosentan in the treatment of a patient with mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) complicated by pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of bosentan in the treatment of severe PAH in a young female patient with MCTD associated with antiphospholipid syndrome. Indeed, the patient very likely improved secondary to the effect of bosentan. (SpringerLink) C. Naclerio.Clinical Rheumatology. August 4 2009. (Also see: MCTD)
Erosive or Deforming Arthritis in Systemic Lupus Erithematosus: Jaccoud's Arthritis, Overlap Syndromes or Mixed Connective Tissue Disease? In our experience, erosive or deforming arthritis is rare in SLE patients who do not meet criteria for MCTD or Overlap Syndromes. The so-called Jaccoud's arthritis is the most frequent deforming arthritis among them. E. Becerra. (THU0268) EULAR 2009. (Also see: MCTD and Lupus)
May Autoimmune Thyroiditis (AIT) Represent a Candidate Risk Factor for Evolution of Undifferentiated Connective Tissue Disease (UCTD)? Results from a Preliminary Retrospective Cross-Sectional Study. This preliminary retrospective cross-sectional study indicate that UCTD with AIT showed a more frequent (although not statistically significant) evolution towards a defined CTD than UCTD without AIT, regardless of other clinical and serological differences. M. Fotinidi. (OP-0051) EULAR 2009. (Also see: Autoimmune Thyroiditis and UCTD)
Arterial Events in Persons with Dermatomyositis and Polymyositis. We found a high incidence of arterial events in this cohort of persons with inflammatory myopathy. A. Tissevereasinghe. JRheum. July 31 2009. (Also see: Dermatomyositis/Polymyositis)
Drug-induced autoimmunity. Even though DIA has been known for many years, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. However, with recently described new and unexpected features, novel hypotheses have been proposed, thus opening doors to further research in understanding these mechanisms. F. Dedeoglu (UnBound) Curr Opin Rheumatol. 2009 Jul 9. (Also see: Autoimmunity)
Risk factors and pathogenesis of Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Epidemiologic studies have demonstrated that the genetic component is important in the pathogenesis of Hashimoto's thyroiditis, although the pattern of inheritance is non-Mendelian and is likely to be influenced by subtle variations in the functions of multiple genes. (PubMed) G. Paknys. Medicina (Kaunas). 2009;45(7):574-83. (Also see: Hashimoto's)
Hypothyroid Graves’ disease complicated with elephantiasis nostras verrucosa (ENV): a case report and review of the literature. Hypothyroid Graves’ disease is a very rare condition among autoimmune thyroid disorders, and ENV is an extremely rare form of TD. Here, we present a patient with hypothyroid Graves’ disease and ENV. (SpringerLink) K. Ükinç. Endocrine. Volume 36, Number 1 / August, 2009. (Also see: Graves' Disease)
Biologics: Target specific treatment of systemic and cutaneous autoimmune diseases. Consensus needs be formed to further categorize the clinical profiles of the patients in whom biologics are to be used in the future, given that the long-term safety profiles of these agents are very much unknown at present. Siba P Raychaudhuri. Indian Journal of Dermatology. 3 Jul 2009. (Also see: Biologic Agents and Autoimmunity)
Prevalence of Psychiatric Disorders in Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) Patients. The results showed high prevalence (63%) of psychiatric disorders in our patient sample. Depressive disorders prevailed in the group with very high proportion (87%). Stress events preceded the RA onset in 52% of pts. T.A. Lisitsyna. OP-0227. EULAR 2009. (Also see: RA)
A Double Blind Clinical Trial: Treatment of Fibromyalgia (FM) in Post-Menopausal Women with Evista. Given the doses of medication used in this study, Raloxifen was superior to placebo in the treatment of menopausal patients with FM. S. Sadreddini. SAT0471. EULAR 2009. (Also see: FM Medications)
Virtual reality tasks disclose spatial memory alterations in fibromyalgia (FM). These results are the first to demonstrate that there is a spatial learning deficit in people with FM. R. Canovas. Rheumatology Advance Access. August 4 2009. (Also see: Complications of FM)
Uric acid (UA) is a strong independent predictor of renal dysfunction in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). UA is a strong correlate of renal dysfunction in RA patients. RA patients with elevated UA may require screening for renal dysfunction and appropriate management. D. Daoussis. Arthritis Research & Therapy 2009, 11:R116. July 24 2009. (Also see: RA)
The Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS) as a Neurological Disease. Neurological manifestations in APS are diverse and may be confused with other neurologic syndromes. (ScienceDirect) Y. Arnson, MD. Seminars in Arthritis and Rheumatism. July 12 2009. (Also see: APS)
Exploratory Analysis of the Relationships between Aerobic Capacity and Self-Reported Fatigue in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), Polymyositis (PM), and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). This study confirms that patients with chronic, but stable RA, PM, or CFS are fatigued and have significantly decreased aerobic capacity. A. Weinstein. PM &R. July 2009. (Also see: RA, PM and CFS)
