| Onset of Exocrine and Endocrine Insufficiency in the Follow Up of Patients Suffering From Autoimmune Pancreatitis (AIP). This study indicates the inflammatory process in AIP is chronic, with a progressive destruction of pancreatic parenchyma, even in the absence of clinical signs and symptoms. Frulloni, L. Pancreas. November 2008. (Also see: Pancreatitis, Autoimmune) | |
| Leaking gut in type 1 diabetes. Several studies have indicated that children with type 1 diabetes show altered intestinal immune system and, in particular, increased small intestinal permeability. Treatment of the leakiness has been reported to modulate development of autoimmune diabetes in animal models suggesting that intestinal environment plays a key role in the destruction of insulin-producing [beta]-cells in the pancreas. Vaarala, Outi. Current Opinion in Gastroenterology. November 2008. (Also see: Diabetes) | |
| Epstein Barr Virus (EBV)-Associated Primary CNS Lymphomas (PCNSLs) in Elderly Patients on Immunosuppressive Medications. These cases serve as a diagnostic alert for neuropathologists and suggest that increased testing of PCNSLs for EBV by immunohistochemistry or in situ hybridization may be warranted in any patient on any immunosuppressive medication, but particularly the elderly. Kleinschmidt-DeMasters, B.K. MD. Journal of Neuropathology & Experimental Neurology. November 2008. (Also see: Immunosuppressants and Causes of Scleroderma) | |
| Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and Fibromyalgia (FM): A Frequent Unrelated Association Complicating Disease Management. The association between RA and FM does not appear to be a marker of worse prognosis, but rather a fortuitous association between the 2 diseases and one that may afford these patients some protection against joint destruction. F. Coury. JRheumatol Dec 15 2008. (Also see: Fibromyalgia and Rheumatoid Arthritis) | |
| Preeclampsia, dilated cardiomyopathy and renal failure as the first manifestation of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE): a case report. We report the case of a 26-year-old woman with severe renal and congestive heart failure as a primary manifestation of SLE after her premature terminated pregnancy for the symptoms of preeclampsia with HELLP syndrome. (SpringerLink) J. Stepankova. Clinical Rheumatology. Dec 12 2008. (Also see: Lupus) | |
| Distribution and severity of weakness among patients with polymyositis (PM), dermatomyositis (DM) and juvenile dermatomyositis. Our findings suggest a greater severity of proximal weakness in PM in comparison with DM. M.O. Harris-Love. Rheumatology Advance Access. Dec 11 2008. (Also see: Dermatomyositis/Polymyositis) | |
| Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) Is Common among Female Patients with Fibromyalgia. This study shows that 64% of a group of female patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia also concurrently suffered from RLS. These patients experience more sleep disturbances and pronounced daytime sleepiness as compared to those suffering from only fibromyalgia. (Karger) R. Stehlik. European Neurology. Dec 9 2008. (Also see: Fibromyalgia and Sleep Disorders) | |
| Vitamin D or hormone D deficiency in autoimmune rheumatic diseases, including undifferentiated connective tissue disease (UCTD). Epidemiological evidence indicates a significant association between vitamin D deficiency and an increased incidence of autoimmune diseases. Patients with undifferentiated connective tissue disease also show vitamin D deficiency and, interestingly, patients who progress into CTDs had the lower vitamin D levels than those who remained in UCTD stage. M. Cutolo. Arthritis Research & Therapy. Dec 2 2008. (Also see: UCTD and Vitamin D Deficiency) | |
| Fertility and Reproduction in Male Patients with Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) Treated with Infliximab. We identified 4 patients with AS who had fathered 6 healthy children during infliximab treatment. Our cases provide some evidence or reassurance for male patients treated with the anti-tumor necrosis factor-α agent. S. Paschou. J Rheumatol First Release. Dec 1 2008. (Also see: Ankylosing Spondylitis, Infliximab and Male Infertility) | |
| Accuracy of the Diagnosis of Fibromyalgia (FM) by Family Physicians: Is the Pendulum Shifting? Of 196 patients referred with an initial diagnosis of FM, the consultant rheumatologist confirmed this diagnosis in 71% of cases. Family physicians in our region are able to accurately diagnose FM. E. Shleyfer. J Rheumatol First Release. Dec 1 2008. (Also see: Fibromyalgia) | |
| May genetic factors in fibromyalgia (FM) help to identify patients with differentially altered frequencies of immune cells? We demonstrate that genetic factors may help to identify FM individuals with differentially altered frequencies of immune cells. (IngentaConnect) Carvalho, L. S. C. Clinical & Experimental Immunology. December 2008. (Also see: Fibromyalgia) |
