The X in sex: how autoimmune diseases revolve around sex chromosomes. It is important not to overlook men with autoimmune diseases, who might manifest a more frequent loss of the Y chromosome in circulating leukocytes. Taken together, sex chromosome changes might constitute the common trait of autoimmunity. (ScienceDirect) Carlo Selmi, MD. Best Practice & Research Clinical Rheumatology. October 2008. (Also see: Causes of Autoimmunity and Causes of Scleroderma))
High dose cyclophosphamide performs better than monthly dose cyclophosphamide in quality of life measures. A randomised clinical trial was completed comparing high-dose cyclophosphamide with monthly intravenous cyclophosphamide in patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) who need cyclophosphamide for the first time. This study shows eventual improvements in quality-of-life with both cyclophosphamide regimens which are clinically meaningful to both patients and treating physicians. (SageJournals) KB Dussán. Lupus. November 25, 2008. (Also see: Cyclophosphamide and Lupus)
Autoimmune diseases induced by TNF-targeted therapies. The use of anti-TNF agents has been associated with an increasing number of cases of autoimmune diseases, principally cutaneous vasculitis, lupus-like syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus and interstitial lung disease. (ScienceDirect) Manuel-Ramos Casels, MD. Best Practice & Research Clinical Rheumatology. October 2008. (Also see: Causes of Autoimmunity and TNF Inhibitors)
Thrombosis in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) and Other Autoimmune Diseases of Recent Onset. Patients with autoimmune diseases, particularly SLE, are at an increased risk of thrombosis. J. Romero -Diaz. J Rheumatol First Release Nov 15 2008. (Also see: Lupus and Antiphospholipid Syndrome)
Regulatory T cells (Tregs) in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE): past, present and future. Tregs maintain immunologic homeostasis and prevent autoimmunty. In humans most workers report CD4+ Tregs are decreased in subjects with active SLE, but they increase with treatment and clinical improvement. D. Horwitz. Arthritis Research & Therapy. Nov 14 2008. (Also see: Lupus and B Cells and T Cells)
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Associated with Paclitaxel Use in the Treatment of Ovarian Cancer. This is the first known case of a patient with serologically confirmed systemic lupus erythematosus secondary to paclitaxel use. Dasanu, Constantin A. MD. Southern Medical Journal. November 2008. (Also see: Causes of Lupus)
Green Tea Protects Rats against Autoimmune Arthritis by Modulating Disease-Related Immune Events. The polyphenolic compounds from green tea (PGT) possess anti-inflammatory properties. Green tea induced changes in arthritis-related immune responses. We suggest further systematic exploration of dietary supplementation with PGT as an adjunct nutritional strategy for the management of Rheumatoid Arthritis. Hong Ro Kim. The Journal of Nutrition. November 2008. (Also see: Rheumatoid Arthritis)
Asthma and autoimmunity: a complex but intriguing relation. Asthma is a heterogeneous disorder characterized by chronic inflammation of the respiratory airways that can be triggered by allergen exposure or by other mechanisms, possibly autoreactive/autoimmune. The autoimmune hypothesis is further, indirectly, supported by the response to immunosuppressive drugs. (IngentaConnect) Tedeschi, A. Expert Review of Clinical Immunology. November 2008. (Also see: Asthma)
Fibromyalgia (FM), Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), and Evaluation of SLE Activity. The prevalence of FM in SLE is minimally increased compared with its prevalence in patients with arthritis. F. Wolfe. J Rheumatol. November 1, 2008. (Also see: Fibromyalgia and Lupus)
Vitamin D deficiency in Undifferentiated Connective Tissue Disease (UCTD). Our results suggest that vitamin D deficiency in UCTD patients may play a role in the subsequent progress into well-defined CTDs. E. Zold. Arthritis Research & Therapy. October 18, 2008. (Also see: UCTD and Vitamin D Deficiency)
Imaging tools for the clinical assessment of idiopathic inflammatory myositis. In suspected myositis, muscle imaging should be strongly considered prior to obtaining a muscle biopsy. Future research should prospectively study the use of muscle imaging in the evaluation of treatment response and muscle function. (PubMed) Walker UA. Curr Opin Rheumatol. November 2008. (Also see: Myositis)
Autoimmune diseases in coeliac disease: effect of gluten exposure. In this study, the prevalence of autoimmune diseases in patients with late coeliac disease diagnosis does not correlate with duration of gluten intake. (SageJournals) A. Ouaka-Kchaou. Therapeutic Advances in Gastroenterology. November 1, 2008. (Also see: Autoimmunity and Celiac Disease)
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for the Treatment of Fibromyalgia Syndrome: A Randomized Controlled Trial. Patients under CBT needed significantly less analgesic tablets, and they achieved better responses in respect to depression and mental health than the controls. (The Haworth Press) Dircilene M. Falc. Journal of Musculoskeletal Pain. 10/20/08. (Also see: Fibromyalgia)
Health-Related Physical Fitness in Women with Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) or Myofascial Pain Syndrome. Compared to healthy subjects, FMS adversely affected the physical fitness performance of the subjects to a greater degree than did Myofascial Pain Syndrome. (The Haworth Press) Neslihan. Journal of Musculoskeletal Pain. October 20, 2008. (Also see: Fibromyalgia)
Habituation and sensitization to heat and cold pain in women with fibromyalgia (FM) and healthy controls (HC). There were large overall differences in pain thresholds, with the FM group showing greater sensitivity to heat and cold pain stimuli compared with the HC group. (PubMed) Smith BW. Pain. October 21, 2008). (Also see: Fibromyalgia)
