Scleroderma Treatments & Clinical Trials (MAIN PAGE)
Overview
What is a clinical trial and how does it work? A clinical trial is a research study designed to test potential disease treatments that have already shown promise in the laboratory or in a limited number of patients through a small pilot study. The goal of a clinical trial is to determine if the treatment works with human patients and if it is safe. Scleroderma Research Foundation.
Clinical Trials for Scleroderma. Completed, activie and not recruiting, not yet recruiting, and recruiting. ClinicalTrials.gov.
Development of a Provisional Core Set of Response Measures for Clinical Trials of Systemic Sclerosis. Using Delphi exercise, we developed a provisional core set of measures for assessment of disease activity and severity in clinical trials of SSc. Dinesh Khanna. 2162. ACR 2007.
Clinical trials in systemic sclerosis: lessons learned and outcomes. Advances have been made in the treatment of SSc but are hampered by its complex nature and disease heterogeneity. Most nonspecific antifibrotic compounds have exhibited few clinical benefits, although more targeted therapies that address SSc-specific abnormalities are showing some promise. Arthritis Research & Therapy 2007, 9(Suppl 2):S7.
Therapeutic targets in systemic sclerosis. Substantial advances have been made in elucidating the pathogenesis of SSc, which has been facilitated in part by the development of more appropriate animal models. Targeting of several putative mediators is now feasible. Arthritis Research & Therapy 2007, 9(Suppl 2):S6. (Also see: Scleroderma Treatments)
Systemic Scleroderma Symptoms. Most of the proven or accepted treatments for scleroderma symptoms are found on the individual symptom pages. See the master listing of scleroderma symptoms or use our internal site search (above) to find the latest information and treatments. The best recommendation we can give is for scleroderma patients to consult a scleroderma expert, since it is a rare illness with unusual complications and unique treatment concerns. ISN.
Types of Scleroderma. Symptoms, treatments and prognosis for scleroderma vary drastically based on the type of scleroderma. ISN.
Assessment Of Unmet Needs In The Design Of Randomized Controlled Trials (RCT) In The Treatment Of Systemic Sclerosis (SSc). Except for gastrointestinal trials, <38% of SSc patients were allowed into trials. SSc lung disease studies had the worst external validity. We need RCT design that includes many patients with SSc as there is a large burden of disease and trials typically do not include the majority of patients. S. Yuen THU0336 EULAR 2007.
Targeted therapy for systemic sclerosis. Systemic sclerosis is a multisystem disease whose therapy is focused at pathogenic pathways causing variable types of damage in the individual organs. There are 3 major pathways that cause organ damage in scleroderma. PubMed. Autoimmun Rev. 2006 Feb;5(2):122-4.
Immunosuppressants - Clinical Applications. Immunosuppressants are used to control severe manifestations of allergic, autoimmune and transplant-related diseases. Treatment protocols frequently use drug combinations to minimise adverse effects and to prevent resistance to treatment. Australian Prescriber.
Scleroderma and Alternative Medicine, Herbs, and Vitamins. Some helpful ideas to try along with tips on therapies to avoid. ISN.

Scleroderma Care and Research Journal (SCAR)
Elevating standards of care for scleroderma throughout the world.
Scleroderma Care and Research Journal The Scleroderma Care and Research Journal (SCAR) is published by the Scleroderma Clinical Trials Consortium (SCTC). The SCTC is a nonprofit group of international scleroderma researchers. This journal elevates standards of care for scleroderma by covering topics of interest for rheumatologists and others involved in scleroderma clinical care worldwide.
