| Diagnosis of Rheumatoid Arthritis | |||||
| Rheumatoid arthritis is generally diagnosed and treated by rheumatologists, in most countries. | |||||
| Rheumatoid Arthritis: How is it diagnosed? The symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis are similar to many other conditions, so a diagnosis is made based upon a pattern of symptoms and the results of some specific tests. Blood tests may check for erythrocyte sedimentation rate, anemia, and rheumatoid factor. X-rays may show changes in the joints. Synovial fluid samples and biopsy of rheumatoid nodules may also be done. Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, College of Medicine. | |||||
| High disease activity disability burden and smoking predict severe extra-articular manifestations in early rheumatoid arthritis (RA). High levels of disease activity and disability during the first 2 years after RA diagnosis, smoking and rheumatoid factor (RF) predict the development of severe extra-articular RA. B.M. Nyhall-Wahlin. Rheumatology Advance Access. February 12, 2009. | |||||

| Anti-Cyclic Citrullinated Peptide Antibody, Smoking, Alcohol Consumption, and Disease Duration as Risk Factors for Extraarticular Manifestations (EAM) in Korean Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). Longer disease duration, smoking history, and positive anti-CCP antibody contributed significantly to the occurrence of EAM in Korean patients with RA. Alcohol consumption in patients with RA had a negative association with EAM. J Rheumatol First Release May 1 2008. (Also see: RA Prevention). | |||||
| Vegan diet promotes atheroprotective antibodies in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The effect was seen when a group of patients who kept to a gluten-free vegan diet for a year were compared with a control group which had followed ordinary dietary advice. Karolinska Institutet. Arthritis Research & Therapy, 18 March 2008. | |||||
| Reactivation of Rheumatoid Arthritis after Pregnancy is Accompanied by Increased Phagocyte and Recurring Lymphocyte Gene Activity in the Peripheral Blood. The increase in lymphocytes and related cell activation pathways indicates an important contributory role of theses cells in disease flare. It also demonstrates a suppression of the adaptive immune response during pregnancy. Thomas Haeupl. 823/68. ACR 2007. (Also see: Pregnancy) | |||||
| The Cutoff Points of Antinuclear Antibody (ANA) with High Negative and Positive Predictive Values. Analysis of 5655 Cases. The cutoff point of ANA titer 160 is appropriate to exclude SLE (Lupus), MCTD (Mixed Connective Tissue Disease), SSc (Systemic Scleroderma) in most of the clinical setting. ANA 640 or higher deserves further investigation such as disease specific autoantibodies even without characteristic clinical findings, especially after proper exams for chronic liver and thyroid diseases and RA (Rheumatoid Arthritis). Hisanori Shimizu. 1515/129. ACR 2007. (Also see: SSc Antibodies, Lupus,and MCTD) | |||||
| Natural compounds block autoimmune response in diabetes, arthritis. Natural compounds from a sea anemone extract and from the rue shrub plant block autoimmune disease responses in both type 1 diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis, U.S. researchers report. EurekAlert! University of California, Irvine. 11/06/06. (Also see: Diabetes) | |||||
| Anti-Cyclic Citrullinated Peptide versus Anti-Sa Antibodies in Diagnosis of Rheumatoid Arthritis in an Outpatient Clinic for Connective Tissue Disease and Spondyloarthritis.Our results suggest that presence of anti-Sa antibodies in serum may be useful as a complementary assay when anti-CCP antibodies are negative and RA is suspected. J Rheumatol 2006;33:1476–81. 08/08/06. | |||||
| Use of antibodies recognizing cyclic citrullinated peptide in the differential diagnosis of joint involvement in systemic sclerosis. Anti-CCP antibodies can be detected in patients with SSc, but less commonly present than in adults with rheumatoid arthritis. PubMed. Clin Rheumatol. 2006 May 3. (Also see: Skeletal Involvement and Antibodies) | |||||
| Anti-lactoferrin antibodies in patients with connective tissue diseases. Patients with connective tissue diseases are known to develop multiple auto-antibodies; anti-lactoferrin antibodies mainly of IgG1 isotype can also be found in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and more often in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. PubMed. Folia Med (Plovdiv). 2003;45(4):25-30. (Also see: Lupus) |
