Diabetes
Janey WillisHello, I am Janey Willis, ISN Guide to Diabetes. Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disease, and Type 2 Diabetes is caused by risk factors such as lifestyle, ethnicity, age, and pregnancy. The majority of people with diabetes are Type 2. This page has not yet been medically edited. Just because something is listed here does not mean an individual patient will ever experience it. Overview of Treatments for Diabetes
All people with Type 1 Diabetes need to take insulin because their bodies do not make enough of it. Managing diabetes with diet and exercise is also important. In some cases, pancreas transplants or islet transplantation are considered to control one's diabetes.
Treatments. This resource is designed to be used with forms that you can print out and personalize to meet your individual needs. National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse.
Diabetes Drugs Compared. A new study comparing three major diabetes drugs—Avandia, Glucophage (metformin), and Micronase (glyburide) —shows that all three drugs have pros and cons to consider. WebMD. 12/06/06.
Immunization Against Type 1 Diabetes - Mice Successfully Treated. Researchers in Toulouse (France) and Berlin-Buch have successfully treated type 1 diabetic mice with a vaccination. The researchers showed that, in principle, it is possible to treat autoimmune diseases by inducing "active tolerance". That means activating the immune system so that it no longer attacks the body's own structures, but instead protects them from the immune attack. Medical News Today. 05/24/07. (Also see: Causes of Scleroderma: B and T cells)
A Designer Approach To Regulating Autoimmunity In Diabetes. Shutting down the autoreactive T cells that attack beta islet cells is one therapeutic approach that researchers have been investigating. Medical News Today. 08/06/06.
Treatments for Complications of Diabetes
Hope over diabetes wound healing. Scientists have engineered a protein which may help speed up impaired wound healing in people with diabetes. The protein in question, angiopioetin-1, is naturally produced by the body, where it helps to promote growth. BBC News. 03/18/06.
Hormones
Vitamin D fights cancers and diabetes, is the pivotal feedstock for a hormone that protects muscle, and inhibits autoimmune disorders from multiple sclerosis and lupus to inflammatory bowel disease. Expired article from Science News Online 04/30/05. (Also see: Causes of Scleroderma: Vitamin D Deficiency)
Insulin
'Bubble' Technique For Potential Treatment Of Type I Diabetes Developed. Researchers have developed a novel technique to deliver insulin genes to the pancreas, the organ that produces the body's insulin. The technique, known as ultrasound-targeted microbubble destruction, delivers these insulin genes to the organ via microscopic "bubbles." Once the bubbles reach their target, they are burst with ultrasound releasing the insulin genes into the pancreas. Medical News Today. 05/23/06.
The Effect of Smoking Cessation and Subsequent Resumption on Absorption of Inhaled Insulin. We conclude that, as short-term changes in insulin availability may increase hypoglycemia risk, people with diabetes who smoke must quit smoking before commencing treatment with inhaled insulin and that inhaled insulin should not be used in those who choose to continue smoking. Diabetes Care 29:277-282, 2006.
Managing Diabetes
Diabetes: How lifestyle and daily routine affect blood sugar. You can keep your blood sugar within target range and prevent diabetes complications by knowing what makes your blood sugar rise and fall. Take a look at the day-to-day factors that can cause your blood sugar to rise and fall. Then find out how to cope with them. MayoClinic.
Pancreas and Islet Transplants
Clinical Trial Shows Islet Transplantation is a Promising Procedure For Certain Patients with Severe Type 1 Diabetes. A year after the final treatment, 44 percent of the transplant recipients no longer needed insulin injections, and an additional 28 percent had partial islet function. NIH News. 09/27/06.
Pancreas and Islet Transplantation in Type 1 Diabetes. Pancreas or islet transplantations should be performed in tertiary care centers that have an active kidney transplant program and are equipped to adequately handle the complex medical and psychosocial needs of transplant patients over the long term. Diabetes Care 29:935, 2006.
A single transplantation of the islets can produce glycemic stability and reduction of basal insulin requirement. Only one islet transplantation can be sufficient to attain metabolic stability, probably by effective supply of basal insulin secretion, sufficient to avoid life-threatening severe hypoglycemia and prevent or delay the progress of secondary complications of diabetes by decreasing the HbA(1c) level. PubMed 2006 April 4.
Infused Spleen Cells Found Not to Impact Islet Recovery and Reversal of Type 1 Diabetes in Mice. Researchers from Joslin Diabetes Center have published in the March 24, 2006, issue of the journal Science a significant study about islet cell recovery and reversal of type 1 diabetes in mice. Joslin Diabetes Clinic. 03/23/06.
Stem Cell Transplants
Stem cell transplantation beneficial treatment for type 1 diabetes. This is the first report of high-dose immunosuppression followed by autologous nonmyeloablative hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for human type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. In a small number of patients with early-onset disease ninety-three percent of patients achieved different periods of insulin independence and treatment-related toxicity was low, with no mortality.
