Overview of Arthritis
Scleroderma is classified as an arthritic disease, along with rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, dermatomyositis, and more than 100 other medical conditions..
What is Arthritis? While often referred to as if it were a single disease, arthritis is actually an umbrella term used for a group of more than 100 medical conditions that collectively affect nearly 46 million adults and 300,000 children in America alone. Arthritis Foundation.
46 Million Americans Suffer From Arthritis. Arthritic disease is the most common cause of disability in the United States and now affects 46 million Americans, or more than 21 percent of the adult population, HealthDay News. 01/04/08.
Arthritis strikes young. Courtney Noel, 11 years old, of Unity, has juvenile arthritis, an autoimmune disease that can cause joint pain, stiffness, swelling and decreased mobility, among many other problems. There are several, and also more severe types of juvenile arthritis, including the type Courtney has —mixed connective tissue disease. Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. 07/02/07. (Also see: MCTD )
Two kinds of arthritis most prevalent. The word arthritis is a broad term used to refer to more than 100 conditions that can cause joint pain. Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis are the most well known. Pocono Record. 06/07/07. (Also see: Rheumatoid Arthritis )
Don't ignore early signs of arthritis. According to the Arthritis Foundation, more than 42 million Americans have been diagnosed with arthritis of some form, such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosis, scleroderma and fibromyalgia. Rutland Herald. 07/24/06.
Autoimmune Arthritis
Autoimmune arthritis is arthritis caused by your own immune system attacking your own body. Types of Autoimmune Arthritis include rheumatoid arthritis, reactive arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, ankylosing spondalytis, and psoriatic arthritis.
The Development of Inflammatory Arthritis and Other Rheumatic Diseases Following Stem Cell Transplantation (SCT). Immunologic manipulation during the SCT process raises the question of whether there is an increased propensity to develop autoimmune disease posttransplant. (PubMed) Semin Arthritis Rheum. 2008 May 31. (Also see: Stem Cell Transplants ).
Exogenous tumor necrosis factor - alpha induces suppression of autoimmune arthritis. The role of endogenous TNF-alpha in the induction and propagation of arthritis is well established. However, exogenous TNF-alpha can downmodulate the course of AA, displaying an immunoregulatory functional attribute of this cytokine. Arthritis Research & Therapy 2008, 10:R38. April 1, 2008. (Also See: Medications )
Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis
Exercise tolerance in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) after autologous stem cell transplant (ASCT). The study group showed significantly reduced exercise tolerance compared to healthy subjects. Functional ability and joint status were also decreased in patients after ASCT. Children with JIA post ASCT have impaired exercise tolerance even 9 years post ASCT. T Takken. Bone Marrow Transplantation. June 30, 2008. (Also see: Stem Cell Transplants )
Complications with Arthritis
Pregnancy Advice for Women With Arthritis. It is recommended that all women with arthritis be counseled by a rheumatologist and an obstetrician before attempting to get pregnant. In addition, women considering pregnancy should have their rheumatic condition under control for at least 3 to 6 months before attempting to get pregnant. Some women with rheumatic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, scleroderma, and Sjogren's Syndrome, have even been advised against becoming pregnant. About.com 04/11/07. (Also see: Pregnancy and Scleroderma )
Diagnosis of Arthritis
Ultrasonography shows increased cross-sectional area of the median nerve in patients with arthritis and carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Cross-sectional areas of the median nerves were significantly higher in the CTS patients compared with the rheumatoid arthristis controls and healthy persons. No significant differences in cross-sectional areas were observed between the two control groups, or between the right and left hand in the control groups. Rheumatology 2006 45(5):584-588. (Also see: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Rheumatoid Arthritis)
Managing Arthritis
Relationship between physical activity and stiff or painful joints in mid-aged women and older women: a 3-year prospective study. These results are the first to show a dose-response relationship between physical activity and arthritis symptoms in older women. They suggest that advice for older women not currently experiencing stiff and painful joints should routinely include counseling on the importance of physical activity for preventing the onset of these symptoms. Arthritis Research & Therapy 2007, 9:R34 doi:10.1186/ar2154 March 29 2007. (Also see: Skeletal Involvement )

Symptoms of Arthritis
How To Recognize the Signs and Symptoms of Arthritis. Because there are over 100 different types of arthritis, symptoms of the disease can be variable, but there are certain signs which point to the disease. About.com
Treatments for Arthritis
Tolerability of methotrexate (MTX) and leflunomide (LEF) combination therapy for inflammatory arthritis in routine clinical practice: results of a four-centre study. The contrasting modes of action of MTX and LEF make them attractive candidates for use in combination with the potential to provide additive or synergistic actions, perhaps without the need for expensive biologic agents. A. Kaul. Rheumatology Advance Access. July 15, 2008. (Also see: Immunosuppressants and DMARDs )
Arthritis gene therapy's first death. The case currently under discussion has given the field a scare, but it seems that the authorities are not holding gene transfer responsible for the subject's tragic death. The logic behind a local, intra-articular gene therapy approach to treating arthritis remains as compelling as it did when first published over 15 years ago, and we continue to believe it will eventually form part of the clinical armamentarium. Arthritis Research & Therapy 2008, 10:110.
The long-term effectiveness of steroid injections in primary acromioclavicular joint arthritis: A five-year prospective study. Local steroid injection is an effective treatment for primary isolated acromioclavicular joint arthritis. Improvement continues for at least 12 months. The benefit is felt up to 5 years. Pain relief tends to diminish long-term. (ScienceDirect) Saqif Hossain. Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery 2008.
Tissue Destruction Blocked By Natural Product From Amazon Rainforest. The discovery's unique actions suggest a broad set of applications in various joint, skin and gastrointestinal diseases, including osteoarthritis and irritable bowel syndrome. Medical News Today. 10/25/07. (Also see: GI involvement )
Prolonged Arthritis Relief Anticipated From New Engineered Drug. Researchers have devised a new way to significantly prolong the effects of an anti-inflammatory drug, potentially making it useful for providing longer-lasting treatment for osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis. Medical News Today. 10/18/06.
Korean scientists find hope for Asthma and Arthritis. The new drug is called FHT-CT4. What it essentially does is suppress overactive "T-cells”, the immune cells that normally help detect and attack viruses or bacteria that have entered our bodies. Chosun. 04/10/06.
